madrid, spain - Atlético Madrid has reached a verbal agreement with Real Betis to acquire USMNT midfielder Johnny Cardoso, with a transfer fee exceeding €30 million.

Atlético Madrid Agrees Deal to Sign Johnny Cardoso

Atlético Madrid has reportedly struck a verbal agreement with Real Betis to secure the services of United States men's national team midfielder, Johnny Cardoso. The 23-year-old has agreed to personal terms with Atlético, with a transfer fee exceeding €30 million.

Cardoso's Background and Performance

Cardoso, a New Jersey-born midfielder with Italian citizenship, joined Betis in January 2024 from Brazilian club Internacional. Despite being only 23 years old, he is already seen as an experienced player in LaLiga. His strong performances for Betis earned him a contract extension until June 2030.

Interest from Tottenham Hotspur

Last summer, Betis signed Giovani Lo Celso from Tottenham Hotspur, giving Spurs a priority option to sign Cardoso for a reported fee of €25 million. However, Atlético's agreement with Betis now seems to secure Cardoso's move to Madrid, pending any potential action from Tottenham before the end of June.

Cardoso has only played 11 minutes for the USMNT at the Gold Cup so far, but his potential and performance in LaLiga have attracted the attention of top clubs.
