paramaribo - Former president and military leader Desi Bouterse will not receive a state funeral in Suriname, announced the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The decision was made to keep calm despite the emotional atmosphere in the society.

Former Surinamese president and military leader Desi Bouterse will not receive a state funeral, according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The announcement was made to maintain dignity and calmness in the society.

During a press conference, Minister Albert Ramdin asked for respectful behavior from everyone amidst the strong emotions. He emphasized the importance of remaining composed during this time of the year.

Addressing the public, the Minister stated that there will be no national mourning period or state honors for Bouterse. However, the national flag will be flown at half-mast, including at government offices, on the day of his cremation.

The government will not open a condolence register, but a signing ceremony will be held by Minister Delano Landvreugd at the NDP party building. President Santokhi is also scheduled to meet with Bouterse's widow on Monday, if the family agrees.

Desi Bouterse passed away at the age of 79 on Tuesday. He had been sentenced to twenty years in prison for his involvement in the December Murders and eleven years in absentia in the Netherlands for drug trafficking. An investigation into his death is currently ongoing.
