Three Hospitals Evacuated in Cologne for WWII Bomb Disarmament

cologne - Three hospitals in Cologne have been evacuated for the disarmament of a bomb from World War II, marking the largest evacuation in the West German city since 1945.

Over the past days, about 640 patients have been transferred to other healthcare facilities in the area. Additionally, approximately 6400 residents had to leave their homes. Around 1300 volunteers and personnel from the police, fire department, and municipality are involved in the operation.

The 1000-kilogram bomb was discovered during the construction of a new health campus. The bomb is set to be defused on Friday evening.

Bomb disarms are not uncommon in Cologne, one of the most heavily bombed cities during World War II.
