united states, netherlands - Learn about the polar vortex phenomenon, its impact in the US, and the possibility of it affecting the Netherlands.

The polar vortex is a large circular and cold low-pressure system. It develops after the summer when sunlight decreases at the poles and they cool down significantly. This phenomenon manifests during winter and weakens in spring as sunlight returns. The cooling after summer creates a temperature difference between the stratosphere around the pole and the stratosphere around tropical latitudes.

This difference is so significant that warmer air from tropical latitudes flows northward to balance the temperature difference, caused by factors like strong winds in mountainous regions. This leads to colder air being pushed southward - warm air pushes cold air downwards.

The US is currently dealing with a severe winter storm sweeping across central and eastern parts of the country. It is bringing temperatures as low as -18 degrees and snow accumulation of over half a meter. Approximately 60 million people in 18 states were under winter weather warnings and advisories on Monday. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's weather prediction center warned that for some, this could be the heaviest snowfall in over a decade.

Hundreds of flights were canceled, and states declared emergencies. Kansas and parts of northwest Missouri experienced heavy snow on Sunday. Roads were covered in snow and ice, prompting authorities to advise against travel. By Monday morning, millions witnessed snowfall from St. Louis and Washington, D.C. to states like Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey.

While the term 'polar vortex' gained popularity in 2014, the US National Weather Service notes that similar occurrences happened in 1977, 1982, 1985, and 1989. The term brought attention to a weather phenomenon that has always existed. In cases of polar temperature changes, dominant westerly winds can weaken and shift to easterly, possibly altering high and low-pressure systems in the Northern Hemisphere. This could result in cold winds bringing freezing temperatures and potentially snow to the Netherlands.

Alternatively, if the Azores High pressure system shifts towards Central Europe, a southern wind may bring early spring-like weather. This happened in February 2021, when a sudden increase in temperature brought pleasant conditions after a wintry week. While the polar vortex itself may not directly affect the Netherlands, the resulting weather conditions could lead to challenging situations like colder temperatures and precipitation. It's advisable to dress warmly and be prepared when heading out.
