china - Chinese animated film 'Ne Zha 2' becomes the most successful ever, grossing over a billion dollars outside Hollywood.

Chinese Animated Film Breaks Records

Since late January, during the Chinese New Year, 'Ne Zha 2' has been captivating audiences in Chinese cinemas, breaking records by earning over a billion dollars, a first for a non-Hollywood film. Within weeks, the blockbuster, costing around 80 million dollars, attracted around 200 million viewers.

The movie revolves around the mythical figure Ne Zha, based on the 16th-century novel 'Investiture of the Gods.' The first installment, released in 2019, depicted Ne Zha as the reincarnation of a demon, with only three years to live. The young boy with superpowers decides to fight evil to protect his village. In the sequel, Ne Zha is tasked with battling the dragons of the East China Sea.

Analysts attribute the film's success to its portrayal of Chinese mythology, resonating with Chinese viewers. Themes of sacrifice, staying true to one's roots, and fate play significant roles, reflecting values important in China.

The visual spectacle and emotional depth of the film appeal to younger audiences, incorporating references to Chinese traditions and history, fostering nationalist pride.

Chinese commentator Wei Wei expressed nostalgia, recalling patriotic films from school days. The nationalist sentiment contrasts with anti-Hollywood rhetoric, with Chinese media highlighting 'Ne Zha 2's' outshining of Hollywood counterparts like Captain America.

Political tensions with Taipei have also surfaced since the film's release, as it remains unavailable in Taiwanese cinemas. Beijing hopes for a change, urging Taiwan to allow more mainland Chinese films. 'Ne Zha 2' has made its international debut in various countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea.
