beijing - A North Korean soldier captured in Ukraine expresses desire to seek asylum in South Korea, raising questions about the repatriation process.

North Korean Soldier's Asylum Request

A 26-year-old North Korean soldier, Ri, captured in Ukraine alongside another soldier, expresses his wish to seek asylum in South Korea. Ri, who was misled about his mission in Russia, is the first to publicly voice such a request.

Seoul's willingness to accept North Korean prisoners in Ukraine wishing to defect was announced following Ri's interview. The South Korean government emphasizes respecting individuals' free will in repatriation, aligning with international law.

Concerns arise over the repatriation process due to Geneva Conventions stipulating immediate release of prisoners of war post cessation of hostilities. It is noted that Ri, facing severe human rights violations in Pyongyang, may be an exception.

With 11,000 North Korean soldiers reportedly involved in the conflict in Ukraine, including casualties, the fate of Ri and the other captured soldier remains uncertain. Ukrainian President Zelensky proposed exchanging them for Ukrainian captives in Russia.

The South Korean intelligence estimates raise questions about the smoothness of the repatriation process, considering the potential risks faced by returning soldiers. The situation awaits clarification as Seoul engages with Ukrainian authorities.
