amsterdam, netherlands/london, uk - Dutch travelers heading to the UK now need to apply for a new entry document, effective from April 2nd, 2025.

New Entry Document Requirement for Travelers to the UK

Starting from April 2nd, 2025, Dutch travelers planning a trip to the UK must obtain a new entry document, known as an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization). This requirement was introduced by the British government in November 2023. Currently, non-Europeans traveling to the UK without a visa or legal residency rights must present this document. From April 2nd, it will also be mandatory for Europeans (excluding Irish citizens) traveling to the UK for short stays. The ETA, valid for two years or until passport expiry, can be applied for online.

According to the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, individuals traveling with a Dutch passport to the UK for stays shorter than 6 months will need an ETA. Those holding a visa are exempt from this requirement. The decision on ETA applications is typically made within three days, ensuring a streamlined process.

The integration of the ETA into the passport facilitates border crossings, with automated scanning by the UK Border Force. Eurostar, the operator of high-speed trains to London, assures minimal disruption at border checkpoints.

If you are traveling to the UK from the Netherlands and require an ETA, you can apply online through the official website.
