Court ordered compensation for CIA prisoners

staatsburg - Romania and Lithuania must pay compensation for two terror suspects who have been tortured in a secret CIA prison on their territory. The European Court of Human Rights has determined that.

The two, Abu Zubaydah and Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri were also in such a prison in Poland. The court in Strasbourg determined in 2015 that that country had to pay 130,000 euros and 100,000 euros respectively.

According to the court, Romania and Lithuania knew what the purpose of the US operations was with the al-Qaeda suspects in the so-called rendition program. They have thereby violated a whole series of rights in the human rights convention. Romania must pay Al-Nashiri one tonne of damages, and Lithuania 130,000 euros to Abu Zubaydah.
