beijing - As the Chinese economy struggles, companies like Pinduoduo and JD are putting more pressure on their employees, leading to the rise of dismissal bloggers in China.

In recent years, employees in China have been sharing their experiences of collapsing under the overwork culture, with health issues and depression being common results. Huang, a forty-year-old former employee of JD, worked long hours and constantly moved around, ultimately leading to his dismissal. According to Jenny Chan, a sociology professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Chinese tech companies now seek younger, single individuals in metropolitan cities to replace older employees. This shift is driven by the slower economic recovery post-pandemic, pushing companies to adopt smaller, faster-working teams. Dismissed employee Huang, struggling to find a new job, took to social media to vent his frustrations, sparking a wave of similar stories from tech company employees who have dubbed themselves 'dismissal bloggers'. Their content has gained immense popularity on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, as it resonates with individuals seeking fulfillment beyond their job titles. Despite mounting criticism, experts believe the influx of job applicants in these companies will continue due to high youth unemployment rates and attractive salaries. Zhu, a software developer at Pinduoduo, recounted her experiences of working long hours alongside young colleagues, noting the detrimental impact of overwork on personal well-being. Although the experience was valuable, Zhu advises against prolonged overworking that could jeopardize one's life. These stories shed light on the dark side of China's demanding work culture and call for a reevaluation of work-life balance priorities.
