ukraine - The devastating war in Ukraine, which began in 2022, marks its third year with millions displaced and tens of thousands dead.

Ukraine War Enters its Third Year

The war in Ukraine, which started in 2022, has left a trail of destruction, with millions displaced and thousands dead. Russia's occupation of 11% of Ukrainian territory since 2022, along with the control of Crimea and eastern Donbas, has reshaped Ukraine significantly.

Uncertain Military Losses

Both Russia and Ukraine do not transparently share military casualty figures. Estimates suggest Ukrainian military deaths between 50,000 to 100,000, while Russia's losses are approximated between 140,000 to 200,000.

Infrastructure Damage at $170 Billion

The war has forced 6.8 million Ukrainians to flee their country, with 3.7 million internally displaced. The UN reports over 1.2 million Ukrainian refugees in Germany, 1 million in Poland, and around 400,000 in Czech Republic. Civilian casualties exceed 40,000, with over 669 child fatalities.

Ukraine's civil infrastructure has suffered significantly, with an estimated cost of $170 billion. The war has destroyed or damaged 294,000 housing units, 26,000 kilometers of roads, at least four power plants, over 4,000 educational institutions, and more than 1,500 healthcare facilities.

Zelensky's Peace Offer

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed readiness to step down from presidency for peace in Ukraine, hinting at NATO membership as a condition. He emphasized the need for US, Russia, and European involvement in peace talks, clarifying Ukraine's aid from the US to be $100 billion, not $350 billion.
