tokyo - Japan mobilizes 2000 firefighters to tackle a massive forest fire near Ofunato city, Iwate prefecture, as experts warn of worsening fire conditions.

Japan Battles Massive Forest Fire

Japan has deployed 2000 firefighters to extinguish a forest fire spanning 2600 hectares near Ofunato city in Iwate prefecture, 500 kilometers north of Tokyo. The fire has damaged over 80 buildings, and efforts to contain it continue.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba assures measures to protect homes as the fire spreads, with one casualty found near the area. Experts note this as Japan's largest forest fire since 1975, pointing to rare weather patterns and geographical factors as key contributors to the severity of the blaze.

Yusuke Yokoyama, a professor at the University of Tokyo, highlights the shock and concern in Japan, particularly after witnessing rapid wildfires in Los Angeles. The combination of dry winter conditions and rugged terrain in northeastern Japan has escalated the risk of wildfires, with the area experiencing its driest winter since 1946.

The absence of rain since Friday has exacerbated the fire threat, with forecasts predicting increased rainfall in the coming days. The steep mountainous landscape in Japan further facilitates fire spread, indicating a challenging battle ahead for firefighters.
