porto alegre, brazil - Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, the oldest person globally, passed away at 116. Known for her devotion to God and love for a local football club, she held the title after the death of a Japanese woman.

Oldest Person in the World Passes Away at 116 in Brazil

Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, who was recognized as the oldest living person globally, passed away at the age of 116. She inherited the title after the death of Japanese woman Tomiko Itooka, who also lived to be 116 years old.

A Life Filled with Devotion

Canabarro, born on June 8, 1908, credited her long life to God, whom she believed helped her through the years. She expressed gratitude for the gift of life, stating, "He is the secret of life. He is the secret of everything."

On her 110th birthday, she received a blessing from Pope Francis. A devoted fan of the Brazilian football club Internacional, her room in the care home was adorned with memorabilia of the team.

Successors to the Title

Following Canabarro's passing, the title of the oldest living person now passes to Ethel Caterham, a 115-year-old resident of Surrey, UK, according to the American Gerontological Research Group and the LongeviQuest database.

John Tinniswood, the previous oldest man globally, passed away at the age of 112 in November. Born in Liverpool in 1912, the same year the Titanic sank, he held the title until his demise. The oldest person on record was purportedly Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who allegedly lived to be 122 years old before her death in 1997.
