belgium - Justice finally takes action after important witness statement ignored for four decades in the Bende van Nijvel case.

Belgian Bende van Nijvel Case Witness Statement

An important witness statement by two boys in the Bende van Nijvel case has resurfaced after 40 years. The boys, who noted down car number plates on the day of the Delhaize attack in Aalst, saw a Golf and a Mercedes speeding by, potentially linked to the robbery.

The ongoing investigation into the Bende van Nijvel, responsible for 28 deaths in a series of supermarket robberies in the 1980s, has taken a new turn. Despite previous claims by Belgian authorities of exhausting all leads, a crucial piece of evidence sat dormant for four decades.

On the day of the bloodiest Bende van Nijvel attack at Delhaize in Aalst on November 9, 1985, two young brothers witnessed suspicious cars passing by their home. A dark Golf and a light Mercedes caught their attention, with the older brother jotting down their number plates.

Witnesses later reported similar vehicles at the crime scenes in Aalst and Groot-Bijgaarden. The boys' account, initially overlooked by authorities, has now prompted a reevaluation of the case, linking the Golf to a suspicious drinks company involved in other criminal activities.

Lawyer Kristiaan Vandenbussche's intervention has halted the closure of the investigation, pushing for a thorough examination of the new leads. The brothers are set to be questioned, and the drinks company will be scrutinized to identify the driver of the vehicle on that fateful day.
