bangkok - A former Thai marine, Ekkalak Pheanoi, has been arrested for the murder of Cambodian politician Lim Kimya in Bangkok. The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about political tensions in the region.

74-year-old Lim Kimya was shot dead by a gunman on a scooter upon his arrival from Siem Reap to Bangkok, accompanied by his French wife. Shocking images of his widow with bloodstains from her murdered husband's clothes are circulating on social media.

The Cambodian police confirmed the arrest of the suspect, Ekkalak Pheanoi, in western Cambodia, a day after the murder. He is expected to be extradited to Thailand for questioning and possible charges. The shooter, identified as a former Thai marine, had a troubled past within the Thai navy, receiving detention punishments twice before being discharged in 2023 for unauthorized absence.

The banned Cambodian opposition figure Sam Rainsy accuses former leader Hun Sen of ordering Lim Kimya's murder. Kimya, who held both Cambodian and French nationalities, had refused to flee Cambodia despite threats from Hun Sen.

Hun Sen, who ruled Cambodia with an iron fist for nearly four decades, is accused by human rights groups of using the legal system to suppress opposition. Even after handing power to his son Hun Manet in 2023, Hun Sen continues to wield significant influence in the country.

Lim Kimya, who became a member of the Cambodian parliament after the 2013 elections, was affiliated with the CNRP, considered a viable opponent to the ruling CPP. The CNRP, founded by Sam Rainsy and Kem Sokha in 2012, faced allegations of treason and was dissolved by court order in 2017.

Despite the ban on political activities by opposition members, many fled into exile. Kimya, a rare exception with dual nationality, chose to remain in Cambodia. The incident has highlighted the ongoing political tensions and challenges faced by opposition figures in the region.
