The Bayesian, owned by Lynch's wife, was anchored near the port of Porticello when it sank during a severe storm. The yacht was carrying 22 passengers and crew members, with 15 being rescued. Among the deceased are tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah, one of Lynch's lawyers, and Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley International in London.

Initially, local authorities feared that thieves might try to access the wreck to steal valuable items onboard, but now they are concerned that foreign governments, including Russia and China, might find the wreck intriguing. The sunken ship, resting approximately 50 meters deep on the seabed, reportedly contains waterproof safes with two encrypted hard drives containing secret and sensitive information related to Western intelligence agencies.

Survivors have indicated that Lynch distrusted cloud services and kept certain data in a secure compartment onboard. He had also been involved in a 12-year legal battle, which he had recently won in August. Divers have requested additional security measures for the wreck, both above and below water, to which Sicilian civil protection has agreed.
