UN Report on Cyprus Issue Raises Concerns among Greek Cypriots

nicosia, cyprus - The recent report by the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres regarding the Cyprus issue has caused worries among Greek Cypriots due to the absence of the term 'federation solution' that they have been insisting on.

The report, which covers the period from June 13 to December 11, 2024, and includes a goodwill mission regarding the Cyprus issue, did not include the phrase 'federation solution,' which the Greeks have been advocating for.

The Greek Cypriot administration expressed concerns that this detail in the latest report released ahead of the Cyprus conference, which is planned to be held in March with the participation of guarantor countries, supports the 'federation is dead' thesis as desired by the Turkish side.

The Alithia newspaper headlined with 'Neither two states nor federation,' indicating that the report did not refer to the UN Security Council resolutions that envisage a solution in Cyprus on the basis of federation. The newspaper pointed out that Guterres has not been using the federation solution in his statements for a long time.

Describing the UN report as an 'unpleasant development,' the newspaper mentioned that Guterres expects the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Ersin Tatar, and the Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Hristodulidis to reach an agreement at least on the opening of new crossing points between the two sides during their meeting in Nicosia on January 20.
