Toxic Cloud Forces 160,000 People to Stay Indoors Near Barcelona

About 160,000 people near Barcelona have been instructed to remain indoors as a safety precaution after a fire broke out in Vilanova i la Geltrú, releasing a toxic chlorine cloud.

Fire Incident and Safety Measures

The fire originated in Vilanova i la Geltrú, located approximately 30 kilometers south of Barcelona, where pool cleaning products were stored, resulting in the release of a large amount of chlorine gas.

The civil protection service has urged residents in the affected area not to leave their homes or workplaces. People from Vilanova i la Geltrú to Calafell, which is about 10 kilometers further south, are advised to keep windows and doors closed.
