storrington, england - Snails targeting letters and parcels lead to closure of Royal Mail postbox in Storrington, England.

Snails Cause Closure of Postbox in Storrington

A Royal Mail postbox in Storrington, southern England, is being closed due to snails devouring the mail inside.

The antique-style postbox, dating back to the reign of King George VI, has been a target for hungry snails, munching on letters, cards, and small packages. Despite efforts to remove the snails daily, the problem persisted, leading to the decision to remove the postbox entirely.

Local residents will now have to travel 1.5 kilometers to post their mail, attributing the issue to the postbox's design, lacking a secure steel box to prevent snail intrusion. Suggestions for solutions include installing a secure box behind the postbox or a spring-loaded letter flap.

Although residents express disappointment over the closure, the Royal Mail has already submitted a request to the Horsham council for removal due to the ongoing issue of snails feasting on the mail.

This incident is not unique, as a similar situation occurred in Northumberland last summer, resulting in the removal of another postbox due to snail activity.
