paris - More than 20 suspects face charges for numerous coordinated attacks on French prisons and staff, possibly in retaliation against stricter government policies.

Over 20 Suspects Charged in Coordinated Attacks on French Prisons and Personnel

Authorities have arrested 25 suspects in early morning police raids across Paris, Marseille, Lyon, and Bordeaux, targeting individuals believed to have orchestrated violent actions against prisons and prison staff.

Investigation and Arrests

The antiterrorism prosecutor's office and the national office for combating organized crime led the investigation following the series of attacks. A total of 30 individuals, including four minors, were detained for their involvement in the assaults.

Retaliation Against Government Policy

The attacks, which included shootings, vandalism of guards' homes, and arson, are suspected to be a response to the government's intensified crackdown on drug-related crimes. The recent legislation granting more power to intelligence services in combating drug trafficking has stirred controversy.

New Security Measures

French officials, including Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin and Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, have ramped up efforts against drug-related criminal activities. Initiatives such as 'narco-prisons' with strict isolation rules for high-risk drug dealers are part of the new security measures.
