seoul - South Korea holds presidential elections with Lee Jae-myung as the frontrunner, amidst a choice between democracy and dictatorship following Yoon's impeachment.

South Korea Presidential Elections Underway

South Korea has opened polling stations for presidential elections, with Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party as the leading candidate. Lee, previously a runner-up in 2022, faces off against Kim Moon-soo of the PPP in a battle for the nation's soul and political reforms.

Choice Between Democracy and Dictatorship

Lee emphasizes countering growing polarization and urges South Koreans to choose between democracy and dictatorship, referencing Yoon's emergency rule reminiscent of past military dictatorships. Kim sees Lee as a threat to abuse power, while the PPP struggles with candidate choices post-Yoon's impeachment.

Approximately 44.4 million South Koreans are eligible to vote, with a third already casting early votes. The preliminary results are expected the same evening or the following morning, to be officially confirmed by Wednesday.

Challenges Ahead for the New President

The incoming president will address issues such as economic setbacks, declining birth rates, and rising living costs. Key considerations include relations with the US and China, South Korea's primary trading partner.
