united states - Megan Garcia, an American mother, continues legal action against Google and Character.AI after her 14-year-old son's suicide following a romantic relationship with a chatbot named Daenerys Targaryen.

Mother Takes Legal Action Against Google and AI Company Following Son's Tragic Death

Megan Garcia, a mother from the U.S., pursues legal action against Google and Character.AI after her teenage son, Sewell Setzer III, took his own life due to a romantic involvement with a chatbot.

Tragic Loss and Legal Battle

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Sewell tragically ended his life on February 28, 2024, after engaging in a romantic and sexually charged relationship with a chatbot developed by Character.AI.

Legal Proceedings

Megan Garcia initiated legal proceedings against Google and Character.AI in October last year. The U.S. district judge, Anne Conway, recently ruled that the lawsuit can proceed, rejecting claims of unrestricted free speech for AI chatbots and dismissing Google's request for non-liability.

Mission for Awareness

Garcia, a mother of three and an advocate for autism awareness, now campaigns for increased awareness of the risks associated with chatbot relationships. She emphasizes the importance of safeguarding children and raising awareness about the true nature of AI chat partners.
