london, uk - Key European and NATO allies gather in London for a historic security council meeting led by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Key Meeting in London

A historic security council meeting is taking place in London with the participation of key European countries and NATO allies, including Canada, Norway, and Turkey. The meeting, led by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, follows a week of European efforts to engage with the White House, culminating in a heated exchange between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Trump. The European leaders, along with Canada, are coming together to ensure the best outcome for Ukraine, safeguard European security, and secure their joint future.

British Prime Minister Starmer welcomed Zelensky and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni before the meeting. Leaders from countries such as France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Poland, Spain, Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, and Romania are also in attendance. Notably, leaders from outside the European circle, including Canada and Turkey, are present, highlighting the unity within NATO.

The meeting aims to strengthen Ukraine's position, continue military support, and increase economic pressure on Russia. The leaders emphasize the importance of a strong and sustainable deal for permanent peace in Ukraine, with measures in place to deter and defend against future Russian aggression. The UK has pledged to increase its defense contribution to 2.5% of GDP, with the Netherlands and other EU countries urged to meet their commitments.

Both the UK and the Netherlands are open to providing ground troops to protect Ukraine post-agreement, with Turkey also exploring potential contributions. Prime Minister Starmer views this meeting as a turning point three years after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, reaffirming unwavering support for Ukraine and intensifying preparations for European security guarantees.

Looking ahead, European leaders will convene in Brussels on Thursday to discuss further defense efforts and aid for Ukraine, although challenges may arise due to differing views among EU members.
