Concacaf President's Stand Against 64-Team World Cup Proposal

Concacaf president Victor Montagliani opposes CONMEBOL's plan to expand the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams. Montagliani stated that the move could have negative implications on the football ecosystem.

Opposition from UEFA President

UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin also criticized the proposal by CONMEBOL, calling it a 'bad idea' that could impact the World Cup and qualifiers negatively.

AFC President's Concerns

AFC president Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa warned that such rapid growth could lead to chaos in football, expressing concerns about potential future expansions beyond 64 teams.

2026 World Cup Testing New Format

The 2026 World Cup will be the first to test a 48-team format, breaking away from the traditional 32-team setup. The tournament will be hosted across stadiums in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
