ukraine - 5.2 million people have left Ukraine since the start of the war, with a significant increase in the number of men leaving the country.

Ukraine's Population Decline

According to the KyivPost, 5.2 million people have left Ukraine since the war began, predominantly women and children. Recently, there has been a rise in the number of men leaving, making up a quarter of Ukrainians living abroad, many of whom are younger than 20 or older than 60.

Even in the past year, an additional 300,000 Ukrainians have left, largely from areas where energy supplies have been destroyed by the Russians. Among this group, 38% are male.

The institute does not anticipate a large-scale return of people to Ukraine even with a peace treaty. Instead, many men currently serving at the frontlines may choose to join their families in Western Europe and not return.

The majority of people fled when the Russians invaded, with 2.5 million residents leaving. A new wave of departures began when winter bombardments on energy facilities started.

1.2 million Ukrainians reside in Germany, and 1 million in Poland. In the Netherlands, there are approximately 120,000 Ukrainians, granted temporary protection but not asylum.

According to CBS, 45% of Ukrainians found independent work within six months. The majority work in temporary employment (49%) or the hospitality industry (16%).
