belgium - A Belgian bio-engineer is facing trial for allegedly poisoning his best friend with rat poison. The accused was reportedly inspired by an infamous British serial killer.

A Belgian bio-engineer, Jean-François G., is currently on trial for allegedly poisoning his best friend, Gaël B., with rat poison. This shocking incident has drawn comparisons to the methods of a renowned British serial killer, Graham Young.

Jean-François and Gaël were inseparable friends for years, sharing a close bond since their school days. However, what Gaël didn't know was that Jean-François had a hidden fascination with Graham Young, also known as the 'Teacup Poisoner'.

Graham Young infamously poisoned his victims slowly, keeping detailed records of their deteriorating health in a diary. Jean-François, a bio-engineer from Brussels, reportedly researched Young's methods and sought information on various deadly toxins, including Novichok, the nerve agent used in the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

In the summer of 2021, Jean-François purchased a significant amount of thallium, a key ingredient in rat poison, claiming it was intended for pest control at a family vacation home. However, the quantity he acquired far exceeded what would be necessary for mere rodent extermination, leading to suspicions of foul play.

Subsequently, Jean-François admitted to lacing sandwiches with thallium and leaving them out for rats, but later he switched tactics by concealing the poison in a tube of skin cream used by Gaël. Unknowingly, Gaël repeatedly exposed himself to the toxic substance, resulting in severe health issues and hospitalization.

Legal proceedings ensued, and Jean-François was arrested in connection with the poisoning. Despite his denial of any malicious intent, the evidence against him led to his official indictment on murder charges in June 2022.

As the trial unfolds, Gaël, still recovering from the poisoning, was unable to attend court. The prosecution has requested a 20-year prison sentence, followed by a decade of supervised release, citing Jean-François as a potentially dangerous individual with a high risk of reoffending.

The ongoing case has been described as one of the most shocking crimes in Belgian history, fueled by Jean-François's disturbing obsession with serial killer Graham Young. The legal proceedings are set to continue in the coming week.
