bangkok, thailand - Thailand becomes the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, marking a historic milestone for LGBT rights.

Landmark Legislation in Thailand

A new law in Thailand allows same-sex couples to marry, granting them full legal, financial, and medical rights, including adoption and inheritance. This significant development follows a decade-long fight by the LGBT community for marriage equality.

Previously, only Nepal and Taiwan in Asia recognized marriage equality. The Thai parliament passed the law last year, which was subsequently approved by the king. This law redefines marriage as a union between 'two persons', regardless of gender.

Foreign couples, irrespective of gender or nationality, can also register their marriage in Thailand. However, both partners must provide evidence of their single status to comply with Thai laws against bigamy.

The new legislation was lauded by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra as a testament to Thailand's inclusivity and acceptance of diversity. The country's readiness to embrace all forms of love was celebrated at a mass wedding event in central Bangkok, where over 200 couples symbolized their commitment amidst festivities and performances.

While Thailand has long been praised as a haven for the LGBT community, challenges persist for other sexual minorities. Advocates, such as lawyer Hua Boonyapisomparn from the Foundation of Transgender Alliance for Human Rights, advocate for legal recognition of transgender rights, including gender identity changes. The struggles faced by the estimated 314,000 transgender individuals in Thailand highlight ongoing discrimination and violence within the traditionally conservative society.
