united states - President Biden grants preemptive pardons to family members and political opponents, citing extraordinary circumstances.

President Biden Grants Preemptive Pardons

President Biden has granted preemptive pardons to several of his family members just before leaving office. Among those pardoned are his brothers James and Francis Biden, his sister-in-law Valerie Biden Owens, and his brother-in-law John T. Owens. The pardons cover all actions taken by his family members since January 1, 2014.

Prior to granting pardons to his family, Biden also pardoned a number of opponents and critics of Donald Trump. The president expressed concerns about potential retribution now that Trump may return to power.

Biden extended preemptive pardons to members and staff of the January 6th committee, including Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, to several law enforcement officials who testified before the committee, and to Anthony Fauci, who led the COVID response in the early Trump administration.

"These are extraordinary circumstances, and I cannot in good conscience do nothing," the president stated in a release issued just hours before the end of his term. "Baseless and politically motivated investigations are devastating to the lives, safety, and financial security of those targeted and their families."

Biden emphasized that the pardons are not an admission of guilt by the recipients. "These pardons should not be seen as an acknowledgment of wrongdoing. Our nation owes debt of gratitude to public servants for their tireless dedication to our country."
