brussels - Belgian broadcaster VRT considers pulling out of Eurovision due to massive public backing for Israel's song, questioning fairness and political neutrality of the event.

VRT Threatens to Withdraw from Eurovision

VRT, the Flemish public broadcaster, is contemplating exiting Eurovision following overwhelming Belgian public support for Israel's contestant, Raphael Yuval, who received twelve points from Belgian viewers.

Concerns Over Fairness and Neutrality

The broadcaster questions the fairness of the current voting system and criticizes Eurovision's shift away from being a unifying and apolitical event, conflicting with its original values and those of public broadcasting.

Potential Boycott and Political Stances

VRT threatens to boycott future editions unless the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) addresses their concerns seriously. Left-wing politicians in Flanders advocate for a boycott due to Israel's participation, while the N-VA party expresses support for Israel following the public vote.

The controversy stems from VRT's previous actions against Israel and a recent protest video by VRT employees' union protesting against Israeli military intervention in Gaza, endorsed by 130 Flemish celebrities.

Political Discourse and Minister's Response

Minister Theo Francken criticizes media focus on Gaza, highlighting the humanitarian crisis but emphasizing the need for self-resolution of the conflict. He challenges the narrative, stating parliamentary actions won't solve the issue.

Despite the discord, VRT's potential withdrawal and political divisions reflect a broader societal debate on Eurovision's evolving identity and the intersection of politics and entertainment.
