madrid - Over 87% of Spanish power supply restored after a massive outage, with free bus services and ongoing recovery efforts. Portugal also near full restoration. The outage likely caused by a disconnection between Spanish and French power grids.

Power Restored in Spain and Portugal after Major Outage

Following a widespread power outage across the Iberian Peninsula, more than 87% of the Spanish power supply has been restored, with efforts ongoing. Free bus services in Madrid and ongoing recovery in 75 out of 179 affected municipalities are underway. Portugal, facing a similar blackout, has reconnected 6.2 million out of 6.5 million households to the grid.

Possible Cause and Response

The outage, believed to stem from a disconnection between the Spanish and French power networks, marks an unprecedented event. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that all hypotheses are being considered. Residents in Madrid and Barcelona celebrated as power gradually returned in certain areas.

Recovery Efforts and Impact

Prime Minister Sánchez, along with government officials, visited Red Eléctrica to assess the situation and ensure a full recovery. Amid asymmetrical restoration levels, some regions see power at 90% normal levels, while others remain at 15%. Schools in eight autonomous regions, including Madrid, will reopen, with teachers not mandated to attend. Train services are yet to resume post-outage.

Continued Challenges and Recommendations

While schools are set to reopen in most regions, work-from-home advice is given to employees. The unusual outage disrupted normalcy, prompting a coordinated response from authorities and utility companies to restore full power supply.
