Strong 6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Crete

Crete, the Greek island, was struck by a significant 6.1 magnitude earthquake, lasting unusually long and reportedly felt in Cyprus, according to Greek media.

Resident Reactions

Many islanders were startled awake by the tremor in the early morning, evacuating their homes swiftly. Local media images show products scattered on supermarket floors and reports of minor landslides.

Situation Assessment

The fire department has not received reports of serious damage or requests for assistance but is conducting patrols to assess the situation. The mayor of Heraklion reassured that there are no major issues, and schools can remain open.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred at nearly 69 kilometers depth, with the epicenter about 58 kilometers northeast of Eloúnda.

Historical Seismic Activity

The region is no stranger to earthquakes, with previous tremors causing concern among tourists and residents. Earlier this year, Santorini experienced prolonged seismic activity, leading to an exodus of people from the island.
