Two days after the expulsion of Islamic State from the Iraqi city of Nimrud is clear what enormous damage has been done. The more than three thousand year old city, which was once the capital of the Assyrian empire lies in ruins, the BBC reports.
The Iraqi army has this weekend in his own words taken the place Nimrud on the eastern bank of the Tigris River. The ouster of the extremist Islamic State (IS) is part of the attempt to recapture the city of Mosul. That city is located approximately 30 kilometers north.
Islamic State has put a video online which shows how a 3000 year old temple is inflated in the Assyrian city of Nimrud. It is the latest attack on archaeological and cultural heritage sites conducting the terrorist movement.
