zermatt - The Swiss town of Zermatt is no longer isolated from the outside world. The Swiss broadcaster SRF reported Wednesday evening that the train traffic between the municipality and nearby Täsch has started again. There was safe driving over the approximately 5 kilometers long track between the places.

On television images you can see that people lined up in front of the entrance gates in the Zermatt train station, where some 13,000 tourists were stranded. Many passengers carried suitcases, winter sports equipment or backpacks. The crowds at the station seemed to stay within bounds.

Zermatt in the Valais canton counts about 6000 inhabitants in addition to tourists. On Tuesday, the authorities decided to stop all traffic to and from the town due to avalanche danger. Train and road traffic came to a standstill and ski slopes and hiking trails were closed. The avalanche danger was somewhat attenuated again on Wednesday.
