beijing - The Chinese National People's Congress has once again elected Xi Jinping as President of China. The parliament also chose former vice premier Wang Qishan as his first replacement.

At the annual conference, the nearly 3000 delegates cast their vote in the Great Hall of the People Sunday. Xi was unanimously re-elected by the parliament that is full of loyal party members. Wang received one vote against his appointment as vice president.

Wang was previously mayor of Beijing, deputy prime minister of China and was head of the Central Commission for Disciplinary Inspection (CCDI) that fights corruption. He is an important ally of Xi to deal with corruption within the Communist Party. Under his rule as a corruption fighter several high officials lost their jobs.

Earlier, the parliament agreed to a constitutional amendment that would allow a president to stay on for more than two five-year terms. This measure paves the way for Xi, who is starting his second term, to remain in power indefinitely.
