Grizzly 399, known for her own Instagram and Wikipedia pages, a feature on the prestigious 'Nature' series, and her significant role in the conservation of the grizzly population, met a tragic end in a routine traffic accident on Tuesday evening in Wyoming. The 28-year-old bear, residing in Grand Teton National Park within the Yellowstone ecosystem, was frequently spotted and photographed along roadsides.

Grizzly 399 first gained fame when she was captured on camera in 2006 by American nature photographer Thomas D. Mangelsen, along with her cubs, sparking interest among wildlife photographers. Designated 399 after her microchip, she became a subject of frequent photography, providing valuable insights for scientists studying her species. The mother bear notably gave birth to triplets, a rare occurrence in the bear world due to the demanding nature of raising multiple cubs simultaneously. Her exceptional ability to raise a total of 22 cubs, including three- and four-litters, set her apart.

Volunteer groups often banded together to block roads and set up detours to ensure the safe crossing of 399 and her offspring. However, despite the precautions, tragic incidents occurred. Mangelsen, who closely monitored her for almost two decades, recounted a harrowing experience when one of her cubs was fatally hit by a vehicle. Unfazed by the traffic, 399 bravely carried the cub to safety, displaying raw maternal instincts.

Her apparent willingness to be photographed made her a powerful symbol for grizzly conservation efforts. Even when she attacked a hiker in 2007, putting her life in jeopardy, she was spared. The hiker himself advocated for her preservation despite the incident. Grizzly 399 surpassed the average lifespan of grizzly bears, reaching the age of 28, whereas the typical lifespan is around 25 years. The identity of the driver responsible for the fatal accident remains unknown at present.
