new york - After being confiscated by authorities in New York, Peanut the squirrel has been euthanized, causing sadness among its 500,000 Instagram followers.

Peanut, the pet squirrel of Mark Longo, gained fame on social media with 500,000 followers. Longo adopted Peanut after finding the squirrel following a car accident where its mother died. Longo cared for the squirrel until authorities seized Peanut.

Following the confiscation, Longo gathered over 30,000 signatures to get his pet back and started a crowdfunding campaign. Authorities sadly announced on Friday that Peanut was euthanized after biting an official.

Longo expressed his gratitude to his followers on Instagram. 'Rest in peace my best friend,' he wrote.
