brussels - Exhaust gases from diesel vehicles are included in the European list of carcinogenic substances against which employers must protect their personnel. Seven other chemicals are also on the list, giving more than 20 million workers in Europe better protection.

The EU Member States and the European Parliament have reached a political agreement on this. The new rules can prevent more than 100,000 deaths from cancer over the next fifty years, says EU Commissioner Marianne Thyssen (Work and Social Affairs). More than half of all work-related deaths are caused by cancer.

Professionals, staff in the construction industry, the metal and the chemical and automotive industries, and in the storage and port sectors will benefit, according to the Belgian politician. Small companies receive support to comply with the health and safety regulations.
