A 34-year-old woman in Townsville, Australia has lost her arm in a brutal attack by her own dog. The police arrived promptly, managed to save her life by stopping the blood loss, and had to shoot the dog.

The woman was attacked at the front door of her house. The pitbull-like dog completely bit off her arm. Police used a tourniquet to stop the severe bleeding and then rushed the woman to the hospital. Her detached arm was taken by paramedics. The woman is in serious but stable condition.

'I have never experienced such a brutal dog attack,' said officer Scott Warrick. 'Her injuries are terrible. We wish her a speedy recovery.' Initially, the officers did not intend to shoot the dog. 'We had no other option. The dog was indoors, but kept trying to get out. It was a very aggressive animal. Drawing the gun was our last resort.'

Two neighbors informed Australian media that they knew the dog was very aggressive and that there had been previous reports to the police. A week ago, the dog allegedly tried to attack a neighbor's dog.
