pretoria - The late anti-apartheid activist Winnie Mandela was both loved and reviled in his own country. She was given the pet name Mother of the Nation, by the stoic calm with which she underwent the threats and harassment of the then-white government, but within the anti-apartheid movement her position was controversial.
Especially the death of 'Stompie' Seipei, a fourteen-year-old black ANC activist who was found killed in a ditch in 1989, has done her much harm. The judge ruled that Winnie Mandela was aware of the abduction and maltreatment of Stompie by her bodyguards. On appeal she came off with a fine.
