brussels - Several versions of the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia are unreachable on Thursday. For example, anyone who goes to the Spanish, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Catalan, Basque and Estonian reference works gets a message and can not read articles. This was done in protest against new European rules for copyright.

The European Parliament will vote on Thursday. 'If the rules are approved, they will cause major damage to the open internet we know today,' Wikipedia said.

The new rules can lead to payment for links to news articles. The law also contains stricter rules for the use of photographs for making memes, funny pictures with texts. Wikipedia does not exclude that it will have to close the doors itself if it can no longer link for free to news articles, something that happens frequently in articles on the site.

The Dutch, Frisian and Lower Saxon versions of Wikipedia are in the air.
