WHO: 7 million deaths from polluted air

World May 2, 2018 06:48

geneva - Each year, 7 million people worldwide die from air pollution, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates in a report on Wednesday.

Nine out of ten people are exposed to high concentrations of hazardous substances in the air, according to new data from the WHO. The UN organization keeps a database on the air quality of 4300 cities in 108 countries.

'Air pollution threatens all of us, but the poorest and most marginalized people carry most of the burden,' says WHO chairman Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. 'If we do not act soon against air pollution, we will never come close to sustainable development. '

WHO sees the biggest problems in Asia and Africa, where 90 percent of the deaths fall. But Europe also knows cities that are unhealthy according to the WHO.
