hawaii - The Kilauea volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, erupted on the U.S. island group of Hawaii, with lava fountains reaching 80 meters high.

The eruption started at 2:20 local time, with lava fountains observed at 80 meters high by 4:30 according to authorities. Molten materials, including lava bombs, were ejected from the crater.

USGS reported volcanic gases and fine volcanic particles being injected up to 2,400 meters above sea level. The eruption seems to be contained within an area of the Volcanoes National Park.

The sulfur dioxide emitted from the volcano is causing volcanic smog, which can have impacts on people, animals, and crops. By 6:30 local time, the eruption had stabilized without threatening the surrounding infrastructure.

Kilauea has been almost continuously erupting since 1983, with the last eruption occurring in September. It is one of six active volcanoes in Hawaii, alongside Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano in the world.

Kilauea, more active than Mauna Loa, is a popular tourist attraction. According to USA Today, numerous tourists flocked to the national park on Tuesday to witness the eruption firsthand.
