brussels - Victims of the 2016 terrorist attacks at Brussels Airport Zaventem are collectively receiving a compensation of €18.3 million, as reported by VRT.

The victims of the 2016 terrorist attacks at Brussels Airport Zaventem are being compensated with a total of €18.3 million, according to VRT. The court has extensively argued on an individual basis why each person is entitled to compensation. One case mentioned is of a woman who was severely injured in one of the explosions. She was hit by human remains and had to be taken to the hospital with serious burns. She not only feared for her own life but also for that of her unborn child. They both survived and are now receiving a compensation of €40,000 per person.

The broadcaster reports that many people are being compensated due to 'the circumstances of the attack,' 'the loss of trust in humanity,' 'the horror experienced,' or 'the fear of imminent death.' The awarded compensations are said to be much higher than usual due to the exceptional circumstances of the attack.

On March 22, 2016, terrorists from Islamic State carried out attacks at Brussels Airport Zaventem and in the Brussels metro. The attacks resulted in 35 fatalities and 340 people being injured. Three of the attackers committed suicide, while three others were sentenced to life imprisonment last year.
