caracas/cúcuta - An important opposition leader in Venezuela, former mayor of the capital Caracas Antonio Ledezma, fled the country on Friday. Colombian and Venezuelan media reported that he crossed the border to the Colombian town of Cúcuta.

The 62-year-old Ledezma was dismissed from his office as mayor because of his opposition to the leftist populist regime in the South American country. He got house arrest and had been home for about a thousand days when he decided to flee. He would consider moving to a European country.
