vatican city - Vatican issues statement on Pope Francis experiencing acute respiratory failure and undergoing medical procedures.

Vatican's Statement on Pope's Health

Vatican reveals Pope Francis suffered from acute respiratory failure today, undergoing bronchoscopies and mechanical ventilation due to mucus accumulation in the bronchi. The 88-year-old Pope has been hospitalized in Gemelli Hospital in Rome for 18 days due to bilateral pneumonia. His health condition remains critical with doctors taking cautious steps due to the complexity of the clinical picture.

Pope's Recent Health Issues

  • Pope was admitted to Gemelli Hospital on February 14 with a polimicrobial infection in the respiratory tract.
  • On February 22, he experienced an asthma crisis leading to critical condition.
  • Following bronchospasm on February 28, bronchoaspiration was performed and mechanical ventilation was initiated with positive response.

Pope Francis, who has faced various health problems in recent years, has been wheelchair-bound due to knee pain. In 2021, he underwent colon surgery at Gemelli Hospital.
