washington - The US Department of the Treasury has fallen victim to a hack where computers of employees were affected, with alleged support from the Chinese government.

The US Department of the Treasury has been targeted in a hack that impacted computers of its employees. According to a letter sent to lawmakers and obtained by The Washington Post, the ministry stated that the hackers had support from the Chinese government.

Reportedly, the hackers only accessed non-classified documents, as per the ministry's statement. Nevertheless, the incident is deemed serious, and an investigation is underway in collaboration with the FBI.

The hack took place in early December when a software provider informed the ministry about hackers gaining access to a security key that allowed them to bypass security protocols.
