The office of the Ukrainian military monitoring treatment of prisoners of war in the Kyiv Independent claims that families are being pressured by Russians with promises of prisoner exchanges.

In addition to seeking sensitive information, they sometimes demand money. This approach towards family members is in violation of international humanitarian law.

According to Ukrainian National Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, as many as a hundred soldiers have been extrajudicially executed on the battlefield in 2024 alone, particularly in the heavily contested Donetsk region. Reports of torture, murder, and mistreatment of prisoners of war are increasing in the area. A recent investigation was launched into the execution of six soldiers by Russian forces in Donetsk.
