ukraine, russia, donetsk, pokrovsk - Ukrainian prisoners of war are reportedly facing horrific abuse, torture, and even executions in Russian camps, according to recent revelations.

Following the release of figures, it was revealed after footage on Telegram showed 16 Ukrainian soldiers surrendering near Pokrovsk in Donetsk. They were lined up by Russian soldiers and shot at. The authenticity of the video could not be verified.

Ukrainian authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances. Evidence suggests that 93 captured Ukrainians were executed at the front lines. This figure does not include the 16 soldiers from last week. If confirmed, it would be the largest mass killing since the war began. Executing prisoners of war is considered a war crime.

According to Ukrainian sources, the number of reported cases has significantly increased this year, with 80% of confirmed executions occurring in 2024. Since November last year, there has been a noticeable shift in the treatment of prisoners of war in general, with reports of increased brutality by the Russians. The UN Human Rights Commission also reported executions of prisoners of war during this period.

A report in March revealed that at least 32 Ukrainian soldiers, captured between December and February, were killed. The paramilitary group Rusich, closely linked to the army, admitted to executing prisoners. A prominent member of the Russian security council urged via his Telegram channel with 1.3 million followers to no longer take Ukrainian soldiers as prisoners but to kill them all.

Disturbing figures were also provided by the Ministry of Defense, indicating that at least 177 Ukrainian prisoners of war have died in cells in Russia or occupied territories. A report from the UN Human Rights Commission released on Tuesday confirmed these deaths and described the treatment of Ukrainian prisoners as exceptionally cruel. 69 detention locations were deemed 'inhumane.'

The conditions in these camps are dire, with many prisoners falling ill but receiving no medical assistance. Soldiers are subjected to beatings, torture, near-asphyxiation, electroshocks, and mock executions. Sexual violence and rape, often involving objects, are reported to occur with the knowledge or under orders of superiors.

Russian prisoners of war also face abuse and torture, although less frequently. Complaints mostly stem from the immediate aftermath of surrendering at the front lines. The mistreatment ceases once they enter the regular system. Systematic abuse of Russian prisoners was not reported.
