uk, bangladesh - UK Minister Tulip Siddiq has resigned from her position as the State Minister for Anti-Corruption in the UK Treasury due to an alleged financial connection with her relative, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed.

UK Minister Tulip Siddiq, who was responsible for tackling corruption at the UK Treasury, has resigned following an investigation into her financial connections with her relative, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed. In her resignation letter, Siddiq stated that despite fully disclosing all alleged financial interests and family relationships, she believed the situation posed a risk to the government's work, prompting her resignation.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Bangladesh had filed cases against Hasina and some family members, including Siddiq, accusing them of abusing power to acquire land after leaving the country for India. Although an internal review by Laure Magnus, an advisor on ministerial standards to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, did not find any rule breaches by Siddiq, Magnus highlighted potential reputation risks due to her family ties in her recommendation to Prime Minister Starmer.

Following this advice, Siddiq announced her resignation.

ACC Director General Akhtar Hossain had previously announced that they had filed three cases against Hasina, her sister Rehana, and Rehana's three children, accusing them of abusing power to acquire land. The ACC alleged that Hasina misused her authority as prime minister to facilitate illegal land acquisition.

Former prime minister Hasina had previously faced arrest warrants in October 2024 for alleged crimes against humanity during large student protests. The International Criminal Court had issued a second arrest warrant against Hasina on January 6 on charges of involvement in enforced disappearances nationwide.
