The Danish authorities have filed charges against two individuals for the 'desecration' of a Quran, a first under the country's law prohibiting such acts. The law came into effect following public burnings of Qurans, sparking outrage within Muslim communities.
The accused duo reportedly engaged in 'inappropriate treatment of a Quran' during a festival in June, with the actions taking place publicly and being recorded and livestreamed on Facebook. While the exact nature of their actions remains undisclosed, the Public Prosecutor's Office in Copenhagen stressed the public visibility and dissemination of the act.
The legislation, enacted in December 2023 in response to Quran burnings in Denmark and neighbouring Sweden, prohibits the burning, tearing, or other forms of desecration of sacred texts in public settings or videos intended for broad distribution.
Violators of the law face fines or a maximum of two years in prison. Reportedly, the police have investigated eight such incidents since the law's implementation, emphasizing the strict enforcement of the regulations.
