brussels - There seems to be 'broad support' among European leaders for the plan to reduce the number of seats in the European Parliament from 751 to 705 in 2019. EU President Donald Tusk writes in his letter of invitation to the leaders for an informal EU summit on Friday In Brussels. The Pool traveled past the capitals in recent weeks to gauge the opinions of the leaders.

The composition of the EU Parliament will be discussed on Friday in connection with the departure of the British from the EU in March next year, shortly before the European elections. This will release the 73 British seats. The parliament has proposed not to delete all those seats but to 'save' 46 for future EU member states. The remainder is divided among countries that are entitled to more representatives because of their population share.

The Netherlands would then get three seats and get to 29. Prime Minister Mark Rutte is in favor of deleting all 73 British seats.

The British Prime Minister Theresa May has not been invited to the summit.
